Two and a half years after her album Dogs In Spirit, the gripping debut that retreated into a terrestrial, mythically inhabited landscape in order to explore the darker chasms of the human psyche, Anna Aaron is back with a new album called NEURO.
Emerging from a world of dust, stones, angels and dragons, Anna Aaron has gathered her forces for a take off into new territory, her creative focus now directed towards imageries of outer space.
Not only the thematic shift but also a first venturing into the realm of electronic music was already evident on the first demos for the album, which were sent to London-based producer David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything) and convinced him immediately. Ben Christophers (known for his solo project and work with Bat For Lashes) and drummer Jason Cooper (The Cure) also joined the team.
Incorporating the more organic elements of Anna’s sound – the bluesy substructure, her habit of knocking on woody surfaces to create rhythmic patterns – into a universe of drum machines and synthesizer walls might seem like a challenge. Producer David Kosten manages this with baffling effortlessness: from the shimmering grace of the opener “Case” to the irresistibly charming groove of “Sutekina”, the grim gallop of “Neurohunger” and the dazzling noise of “Totemheart”, the result is a journey through the haunted computer-labyrinth of modern man, thrilling in its every facet.
