Via are two guys who are not accomplished musicians, singers or performers. We do not desire to be the next American Idol and would not qualify to be on any of the talent shows. We are simply songwriters. The irony is not lost on us that God gave us the desire to write music but not the skills to play it. If we wanted to give these songs life, we’d have to do it ourselves. Thus, we set out to record the 60 or so songs we've written ourselves. Our first wave was in the late 1980's. As two guys with little or no musical or singing talent, we produced songs of varying quality, everything from extremely embarrassing to only moderately embarrassing. Nonetheless, we were able to unleash these songs onto the magnetic medium we used to call the cassette tape. Full of hisses and buzzes, muffled instruments and toneless singing, we created about 4 hours of music that was, if nothing else, our own! And we were proud of that. Unfortunately, and perhaps fortunately, we had the self-control and the self-awareness to not share this with the world. Our songs were sort of like ugly babies, difficult to show off, though we loved them dearly. Wave 1 ended in the early 1990’s.
Flash-forward to today, we find ourselves older and wiser, yet our self-control begins to wane. Maybe it's the "I don't give a crap" attitude people develop with age. Or maybe technology has cut us some slack to boost our confidence. And by “us”, I mean all the people that have music trapped in their brains and no dexterity or talent to release it. For us, we discovered the digital audio workstation and wave 2 had begun. Controversial to the music industry, it basically turned our computers into music word processors. With lots of study, practice and patience, Via could now produce songs that far exceeded our actual skill level. It still falls short of the current standard of music production, but each year, we get a little better. So, we are finally able to share some of our songs with you. Taylor Swift or Harry Stiles, we are not. Nor are we Barry Manilow or Tom Jones. We’re Via, two songwriters just wanting to be heard. And to those that are listening, we humbly thank you.
